Evento "On Self-awareness, or Lack thereof"
Lunedì 2 Novembre 2026 | h. 15:00-16.30
Aula B di Filosofia | via Garibaldi 20 | MACERATA
Does self-awareness necessarily accompany conscious experience? According to a prominent view, the answer is affirmative: all conscious states possess a minimal, first-person form of self-awareness. Drawing on conceptual distinctions from the philosophy of language and on cases involving third-person self-reference, this talk examines the relationship between experience, first-person perspective, and self-awareness. It argues that this distinction lets us characterize the structural features of conscious experience without presupposing self-awareness, raising questions about its alleged ubiquity.
